History of Torricella del Pizzo

From its origins to today.

The history of Torricella del Pizzo is intimately linked to the events of the river Po. During Roman rule the Po had a very wide basin formed by many intersecting channels, which created various islands — among them the island of Pizzo. Legend has it that a tribe of the Helvetii lived on the island and long resisted the Romans thanks to the treacherous terrain (around the 1st century BC): we speak of legend, since no document or archaeological find proves it.

The importance of the island of Pizzo grew over the centuries, along with the rise of the Po as an extraordinary trade route: river navigation allowed the transport of goods and connections between territories, shaping the life of the village and its people.
